Hi Neighbor, My name is Shelley Pohlman andI am running for election to the JCC School Board because of my steadfast commitment to the future of our schools and workforce. As a proud graduate of Lakefield High, class of 1983, I am devoted to ensuring every child has access to the same exceptional education I received.

Let's get back to basics and ensure all students can proficiently read, write, and do arithmetic. This is crucial for ensuring their successful future.
The number of students meeting math, reading, and science standards from 2019 to 2023. We can do better. We must do better.
- STUDENTS FIRST: I am seeking election to the JCC school board because of my unwavering commitment to the future of our students' education, workforce, and nation. As a proud graduate of Lakefield High, Class of 1983, I am dedicated to ensuring that every child has access to the same exceptional education I received from outstanding teachers.
- TRANSPARENCY: I am committed to actively engaging with the staff, faculty, and community to enhance board transparency and ensure that our district reflects the community's values.
- STAFFING: The district's 2024-2025 budget reveals general fund revenues totaling almost $16.2 million, with expenses close to $16 million. As student enrollment continues to decline, staffing will be directly affected. I am dedicated to conducting a thorough analysis of the data and implementing creative strategies to underscore the crucial role of having the right staff to elevate our academic performance. The school board must prioritize actively seeking and implementing strategies, such as competitive compensation and attractive incentives, to recruit and retain professional educators successfully.
- FUNDING: The funding of public schools in America is consistently a challenge. Despite the importance of investing in the education of our children, it is often underfunded at both the state and federal levels and relies increasingly on local property taxes. I am confident that by uniting as a community, we can tackle future budget shortages, implement forward-thinking, long-term solutions, and rally behind our students and teachers to foster a culture of security. As a board member, I will work with elected officials to secure additional funding for JCC.
- SCHOOL CURRICULUM: In recent years, we have witnessed a concerning decline in academic achievement. Poor scores are not just a statistic but a call to action. We must address this issue directly by promoting an atmosphere of open collaboration. By uniting teachers, parents, students, and community members, we can establish a network that propels positive change. I am dedicated to listening to your concerns, honoring your input, and working collectively to implement effective and affordable solutions that enhance our academic scores.
- TEACHER SHORTAGES: I am dedicated to ensuring that every student receives the support they need to succeed and that every teacher is fully equipped with the necessary resources to help our future generation thrive. One of the most significant concerns is our schools' adequate staffing and resources. It is crucial for teachers to feel supported to provide an excellent classroom experience for students. We cannot achieve optimal learning outcomes or work toward academic proficiency without the proper resources and support for educators, students, and staff. Additionally, improving access to funding and resources is vital to prevent high staff turnover and maintain a skilled workforce to deliver our students' best and most consistent results. I believe it is essential for board members to collaborate with frontline educators and school administrators to identify and develop affordable and creative solutions to address these issues.
